The study revealed that after two years of use, more than than one third of a pillow's weight is made up of living and dead dust mites, dust mite feces, dead skin and bacteria.
Pillows at home and in hospitals have been overlooked as breeding grounds for infectious germs—including superbugs—according to a study cited by The London Times on Wednesday.
The problem arose in early February, when Cheng, after attending a class in a Columbia lab where radioactive material was used, was found to be contaminated. The next day, she says, she discovered that the pillow her husband used was similarly contaminated and turned it over to Columbia.Pillow Pets
After a month-long investigation led by university radiation safety officer George Hamawy, who's in charge of the lab, Columbia officials expelled the biology major and accused her of the bizarre plot. She is appealing.
Cheng and her supporters fault Columbia for leaving its probe up to Hamawy, who, they say, might be less than forthcoming about the possibility that she was contaminated in a lab that he oversaw.
